5Adorable contemporary mangaJun 27, 2011
By Tiger Holland
Ryoko Sakura likes quiet, studious Ryunosuke Fuji. Well, at least, she assumes that Fuji is studious. She's never actually talked with him, but he seems like the brainy type and she'd love to get a little closer to this serious guy who all the girls in school overlook. But then Ryoko sees Fuji skipping school, wearing a high-class suit, and talking to a rich girl who may or may not be his girlfriend. Turns out that he has a job working at a host club, meaning that he's a guy who's paid to take girls on dates. Fuji actually develops an interest in Ryoko, but she doesn't believe him because he's been so sneaky about other things. They end up in a battle of wits to see who will give up their goal first, and Ryoko may not be able to keep from dating Fuji when he's so persistent.

Ryoko is such a sweetie and she's so lost in her fantasy daydream world that she doesn't realize she's not living in a romantic comedy. (Actually, she kind of is...it's just a different type of romcom than the thinks.) She's tired of romantic games and guys who are on the make. She's looking for someone to have a quiet sort of love with, and then she finds out that her dream guy is a host, of all things. Host clubs are difficult-ish to explain because we don't have them in America, but the teenage kind mentioned in B.O.D.Y. is basically a PG version of an escort service. Fuji is paid to hang out with girls and flirt with them like a boyfriend would, but that's pretty much it. At any rate, it still sounds shady, and Ryoko is thoroughly weirded out by it. Her moral outrage is actually pretty cute, and it highlights a serious relationship issue--how can she trust a guy who earns a living by telling girls what they want to hear?

Fuji's one of those lovable scoundrels. He intentionally baits Ryoko to make her explode into hissy fits, but he also admires her compassion and the strength of her convictions. By the time he decides the he likes Ryoko, but she has had enough of his duplicity. She actually whacks him upside the head with a garbage can when he announces his intentions, but her pointed dislike just makes him all the more invested in getting her attention. His character really keeps readers off-balance, wondering when he's being sincere, when he's planning something, and when he's making it up as he goes along.

Of all things to notice in the drawings, I paid a lot of attention to Ryoko's hair. It is adorable. She's always doing something off-kilter, asymmetrical and messy with it. She leaves it down and pulls part of it into a knot on the side of her head. She curls her hair, and the corkscrews unravel. She piles it in a careless bun that sticks together out of sheer willpower. I think it's amazing that the author could actually capture hair in such a way that it looks realistic and isn't that perfect, changeless anime hair. It's also neat how Ryoko's sleeves are always way too long, which makes her look even more disheveled.

This is a cute story with nice art and plenty of funny moments to break up the teen drama.

5Loved it :)Jun 17, 2008

This is a sweet romantic comedy that I have quickly grown to love. I've already read the first six volumes so I can tell you if you have a problem with the "unpolished" artwork in this volume it gets much, much better as the series continues and I can't help but love it. The character Sakura Ryouko is a very strong willed aggressive girl who doesn't allow people to mess with her and that is evidently seen when she is constanly being tricked by Fuji, the guy she originally had a crush on until she finds out what his part time job is.

5I love it!Sep 24, 2008

At first glance this first volume may seem rather boring, but it gets really good! I found it rather funny! The plot up 'til now seems normal. I could relate to it cuz when you meet someone and you think good of that person, then you find that that person is exactly the opposite! So, I guess that's why I liked it so much... I wanna read the whole series!

5I really liked this manga. I will read the whole seriesMay 27, 2008
