5Second to last volume.Dec 15, 2007
By Michiru
Though the final battle that closes the Buso Renkin story begins this volume, it's not the main point of it. Instead, this book focuses on the characters: we learn about their histories and motivations, and watch them decide their next--and final--moves.

In previous volumes, our hero Kazuki found out he'd been cursed. He finds a possible cure now, but it comes with a terrible price that he might not be willing to pay. Also, his long-standing not-quite-affair with Tokiko must be resolved.

He's the main focus, of course, but not the only one. Volume nine also reveals a bit of Tokiko and Bravo's history, as well as our villain, Victor's, reasons for his actions.

Meanwhile, a few great new characters (the wise yet hilarious Shousei, leader of the Alchemists, and Victor's wife and child) keep the story moving forwards, while an old favorite makes a welcome reappearance.

The art, as usual, is very good with clean lines, clear facial expressions and body language, and exciting battle scenes. It makes good characters even more interesting and expressive and turns this book into a page turner.

Be warned: the ending is a cliffhanger. The final battle begins, and many readers will be left clamoring to know how it ends. Don't worry--you'll find out in the final book soon enough.

Buso Renkin is here what it has been since the first volume: a fun, action-packed story that knows how to be exciting, funny, and touching by turns. Highly recommended.
