5Pure AwesomenessJan 19, 2011
By Esther
A while ago, my friend lent me the first six volumes of Claymore.

To be quite honest, I was put off by the first and second volumes.

I thought Claymore was extremely boring. It's just about a claymore named Clare killing monsters that pop up. Is there even any depth? So what?

Then came the third volume. HUH? So the story is now centered on a new character... wait is it going to keep jumping around to random Claymores? I don't really care for these claymores at this point, all they do is kill monsters... is there even going to be a deep storyline?

Being really bored, I wanted to stop reading Claymore at this point.

Then things kind of picked up in the fourth volume. My reactions changed from being bored to lukewarm.

and YES!! YES YES YES!! The fifth volume was what set everything into motion!! The deep storyline, the motivation, the characters - everything was being pieced together! It finally made sense! Freaking AMAZING!! It gave insight into Clare's character, and what happened in her past that made her become a claymore and Now I was hooked!!

Claymore is such an amazing manga!! The storyline is really quite freaking addicting and deep! Volume 5 really have hit a high point!

Now this is one of my most favorite manga ever! I am addicted!! However, I'm pretty sure if I only had the first and second volumes at hand without reaching to volume five, I would have dismissed this manga and never touched it again. And I would have regretted that!

The rest is history, as I sit here staring at my collection of 10+ volumes of Claymore manga.

Claymore, Vol. 5 / 9781421506227

I've actually watched the complete Claymore anime first before getting into the manga; I'm really liking the manga source material, as it rather closely follows the anime but has a few extra details and world-building information along the way. I definitely love the clean, crisp black-and-white artwork, though I do still have to remember the right-to-left / back-to-front reading.

Volume 5 provides the following scenes:

Scene 22: Marked for Death, Part 5
Scene 23: Marked for Death, Part 6
Scene 24: Marked for Death, Part 7
Scene 25: The Slashers, Part 1
Scene 26: The Slashers, Part 2
Scene 27: The Slashers, Part 3

For those following along with the anime series, this volume corresponds to:

Episode 8: Awakening (Scenes 22, 23, and 24, and carried over from Volume 4.)
Episode 9: Those Who Rend Asunder, Part 1 (Scenes 25 and 26.)
Episode 10: Those Who Rend Asunder, Part 2 (Scene 27, and carried over into Volume 6.)

This volume finishes the Teresa arc as she faces off against Priscilla, and segues into the Slashers arc with Clare fighting alongside Miria, Helen, and Deneve against the Awakened Being.

The only thing I don't like about this volume is that I preferred the more angular facial artwork for Teresa that was on display in the anime -- I still think the rounded face in the manga looks very child-like. If you liked the anime series, though, I am certain you'll like this manga volume; I recommend it for extra detailing and world building.
