Yu Watase, Fushigi Yugi: Guardian (Viz, 1996)
We're into the second major story arc of Fushigi Yugi now, and unfortunately it's just not holding up the way the first one did. Still, if you've invested the time to read the first one, you're not going to stop now, right?
Miaka must re-enter the Universe of the Four Gods to find seven "memory stones" for Taka, to restore his Tamahome memories and make him a true denizen of our world. (Hmm, Miaka's going after seven objects. Sound familiar?) Problem is, she's got some enemies attempting to hinder her, as usual...
What makes this arc different than the last I'm not sure, but there's definitely something different going on here. It almost seems as if Watase has gotten tired of the characters, and wants to move on to something else. This is also, unabashedly, a setup volume-- we meet some important new characters, but they don't do terribly much yet. This is a volume to slog through on your way to better times. ** ½
