A fun seriesMay 27, 2009 The plot centres around Haruna, who was devoted to playing baseball before entering high school. The story starts just as she begins high school, determined to put all her effort into finding a boyfriend. Unfortunately, she's kind of clueless when it comes to attracting guys. By coincidence she meets Yoh, a cool, trendy guy, who she's convinced can coach her to achieve her goal.
To an extent this manga has a lot of typical shojo manga elements and is predictable in certain ways. That doesn't make it any less fun though- & it really is an entertaining read. There's something special about this manga that just really draws you in!
Haruna is really likeable- she's strong (physically), hard working and is usually pretty clueless, which makes her a fun lead character. All the main characters are well developed and the story is also well thought out.
As far as I'm concerned, if you're looking for something light & fun you can't go wrong with this series. I definitely recommend it!
Hits the right things...May 22, 2009 This is a dynamic series that, despite the "make-over" beginning, remains funny and endearing through all 13 volumes; the resolution is complete, yet leaves you longing for another series so you can continue following these wonderful characters. Overall, the themes covered extend beyond the average romance and comedy genres; this would be an excellent series to recommend for teen readers who need a self-esteem boost in the relationship department.
This is a romantic comedy with occasionally darker overtones; we know that the characters will fall in love, we hope they will stay together, and we want them to continue to grow on their own as they grow together. At first, we see Haruna feeling like she needs a "make-over" so she can get a boyfriend (themes: peer pressure, media pressure, self-esteem) and obtains a coach in the shy/brusque Yoh. As she struggles to understand herself and what she wants in a relationship, Yoh also struggles to resolve his own feelings about her and his outlook on life (themes: growing up, tolerance/understanding). Once the characters become romantically involved, the series evolves to cover a variety of obstacles to their relationship, including an ex, sibling rivalry, and friends competing for their attention (themes: jealousy, forgiveness, cheating, quality time, kindness, communication). In addition, the characters do confront physical intimacy and make specific choices about it.
If all teen relationships were like those portrayed here, we would see fewer teen pregnancies and few divorces. That said, this should probably be directed at older teens; there is a same-sex kiss midway through the series (comical) and a dramatic near-assault. Crude language is minimal and more prevalent near the end of the series. Lingerie is featured once, and characters share their longings, though not in a graphic way. Kissing/Making out is kept to a minimum and portrayed as an expression of deep feeling, not a way to pass the time. Characters seek relationship as a way to grow, and the challenges seem to show that each becomes a better person because of the influence of the other.
Most readers will find themselves somewhere in the pages of these books; this is the principle charm of what would otherwise become a boring, predictable, or childish series.
^_____^Oct 19, 2008 Koukou Debut is amazingly addictive. Sure, it's a little silly and predictable, but it really is very cute. Haruna is absolutely hilarious. I just love her character - she's a strong female role unlike a lot of the typical female protagonists in shoujo manga. Ah, and there are so many moments that had made me squeal/made my heart flutter with the seer cuteness. Yoh has really proved me wrong, he tries to act like he doesn't care/tries to act cool, but he really is very kind and even a little shy. I think Haruna and Yoh really compliment each other. The only thing that has kind of bothered me so far is how everyone insults Haruna - she isn't ugly D: Anyway, if you're looking for something fluffy and humorous, Koukou Debut is for you!
High School DebutMar 18, 2008 High School Debut is one of the funniest shojo mangas that I have ever read. Although it is only the first volume, it is well written and provides the reader with plenty of laughs. I expect great things from this series as it progresses.
Coach me, Yoh! Part 1Mar 18, 2008
Haruna Nagashima is utterly hopeless in all things excluding sports. When she was in middle school she excelled at them and spent most of her free time reading manga. This gave her a very distorted view on matters of the heart. Now that Haruna has entered high school she has vowed to get a boyfriend and tries her damndest. The problem is that Haruna is trying to hard and catches the eye of Yoh Komiyama, a very attractive classmate of Haruna's.
Haruna decides that she needs a coach to teach her what to do to attract a guy - what to do, what to say, how to dress, how to act - and she pursues Yoh to teach her all of these things. With great reluctance he accepts but makes her agree to one condition, that she not fall in love with him. With a growing feeling for him in her heart she accepts and embarks on her quest to catch the perfect boy.
Haruna is such a great character. She is awkward. she is quirky. She is klutzy. She is inane.... She is utterly human. Yoh is another story, dense and emotionless and robotic. However, if anyone is going to crack his cold exterior Haruna would be the character to do it. This is a tremendous start. I am already a fan.
