5Gorgeous book with easy to follow story.Apr 27, 2007

My 5 year old loved the movie so I bought this book and it is/was a big hit. Even though it is rather long for a childrens book each page isn't too wordy as some can be and the illustrations are a beautiful as the movie's animation.

4Love the chicken feet on the castle!Sep 01, 2007
By C. Dobbins "Serenity45"
I saw the movie, Howl's Moving Castle, and then saw the picture book advertised. As I am a teacher-librarian in a high school, I decided to buy the book to put in the school library. I found the pictures bright and eye-catching, and I knew that our students do a study of picture books in English in their senior years. The castle also links very strongly to the story of Baba Yaga, whose house was on chicken feet, although it was a much darker abode. One of the seniors has reserved the book already, so I think my decision has been vindicated. Also, the book is much more appealing than the text version, although the text version does explain some of what happens to Sophie. I highly recommend this book.

5A wonderful companion book to the animated featureMar 16, 2012

My daughter and I are ardent fans of Hayao Miyazaki's animated features and we have amassed quite a collection of both the DVDs and also the picture books.

Howl's Moving Castle takes viewers into a fantastical world of magic and fairy tale-like settings. A young girl, Sophie works in her mother's hat shop, leading an ordinary, uneventful existence until one fateful evening when she is visited by the Witch of the Waste. Sophie inadvertently offends the witch who transforms her into a very old woman. Horrified by her appearance, Sophie embarks on a quest to undo the spell and begins an amazing adventure. She meets many interesting characters - there's a strange scarecrow with human-like instincts; Markl, Howl's young apprentice; Heen, a cute wheezing dog; Calcifer, a sort of fire demon; and of course, Howl, a young and reckless wizard. Through her adventures, Sophie learns that she has much untapped potential, and gradually sheds her insecurities and low self-esteem.

There's plenty in this enchanting story to captivate readers young and old - romance, magic, and lots of adventure! The illustrations contain many of the animation found in the feature film. The text captures the essence of the storyline and my seven-year-old was thrilled to be able to read the story independently. A great companion book to the movie.

I really love this book. It's a pretty big book, hardcove,r and it's full of great illustrations(which is why I bought it). It was purchased for my son(an animation major) and he really likes it for the artwork.
