5One of the greatest manga ever doneJan 23, 2011

The final volume, and everything is wrapped up, with a twist ending, a surprise or two - but NO SPOILERS. If you've gotten this far, you'll of course read it - that's just a given. It will be worth it. Trust me.

Takahashi has lost none of her skills in story-telling or weaving her artwork in a deceptively simple manner around a story. I am rather proud of myself (I admit immodestly) that I actually figured out what was going to happen - well, sort of figured it out; actually I figured out only a little bit, and I did not anticipate the (actually several) twists at the end. They are quite satisfying twists too.

Romance, adventure, comedy - top of the line: InuYasha is a genuine masterpiece.

I have been a fan of InuYasha since I was a 10 year old in the year 2002 and I will always love this series! I LOVE the ending! It is very happy and perfect! Just what our heros needed after all they went through! A brilliant conclusion to a series that has so many of my wonderful childhood memories! I love this book and am VERY happy I bought it and it's in my collection. I'm a very satisfied customer!

5I enjoy the conclusion...Mar 07, 2011

but it's sad that the series ended. I was hoping a new InuYasha adventure would begin. Thank you Ms. Takahashi for a truly wonderful Story line. An excellent take on Feudal Japan, Demons, Romance, and lots of Action. And in some places funny as hell.

Thanx,

JRM

3The wish of the jewelJan 18, 2011

It's been a long, winding road, but this is it -- the climax battle of the entire series. The battle royale. The grand finale.

Yes, this is the final volume of Rumiko Takahashi's epic fantasy series "Inuyasha," which pits our heroes (and antiheroes) against the malevolent Naraku once and for all. Like most of her series endings, "Inuyasha, Volume 56" is a slightly mixed bag -- the plot is kind of a letdown, but Takahashi does provide a satisfying end for the characters.

Sesshomaru and Inuyasha unleash a desperate attack on Naraku, and are quickly joined by Miroku and Sango -- just as Naraku is approaching Kaede's village. If he is killed now, his toxic corpse will destroy the village and everyone in it. It's up to Kagome to strike him for the last time -- only for Naraku to unleash his final vengeance on her.

Warning: you're going to find out who survives ahead. Still with me?

Then the story timeskips to three years later, revealing what has happened to the various characters -- Miroku, Sango, Rin, Sesshomaru and Shippo are all going on with their lives. Inuyasha and Kagome have been separated all this time, but their mutual feelings may be able to bring them back together...

Here's the bad news: the plot of "Inuyasha Volume 56" implodes in the second half. The big messy explosive battle with the disintegrating Naraku is brilliant, but suddenly the plot goes on a random direction that has never been hinted at before. It's like Takahashi thought, "Hey, this ending is too straightforward -- I need to add a twist!" But that twist just feels tacked on.

But despite the spotty plot, Takahashi does manage to insert some truly powerful, haunting moments into the story, such as Kagome floating in a hellish, lonely limbo. And there are some funny moments too ("Why don't you go fox-hunting for a change?").

Fortunately, the emotional aspect of the finale is more gracefully handled -- Takahashi gives each of the characters an ending that they deserve, and show how they're getting on with their lives. Some of the characters have changed a little since the final battle, and it all feels very natural and organic. And don't worry, the romantic conclusions aren't mushy at all.

"Inuyasha Volume 56" has a wonky plot that is kind of confusing, but the characters are all given amazing, beautiful endings.

1What a crappy, horrible ending.Feb 13, 2011
By B. pentecost
I am very disappointed.

Takahashi drew this series out for as long as she possibly could, artificially padded and stuffed every conceivable nook, cranny, hole, crevice, and fold of the story, then gave us like what.... 5 pages worth of ending!? TERRIBLE. I don't think I've ever seen a more skimped on denouement. If the story of Inuyash was translated into bell-curve form, the ass end of the curve would look like a straight line to the floor. Total crap, copout, BALLS!
