5LOVE this mangaApr 11, 2012

as a fan of bleach (obviously), full metal alchemist, ao no exorcist, durarara!!, etc. ive always had a fondness for mangas with GOOD art. this manga had beautiful art, and a wonderful story line. Utsuho Azako, an orphan carrying the burden of a terrible past, has sworn never to tell the truth again. that being said, he is a very good-natured kid who sets out to help a hundred... a THOUSAND people with his lies, in honor of the man that took him in and became his family.

along the storyline you meet many characters who's personalities you can just about fall in love with. along with those who generate such emotions that make you want to jump in the book and strangle them. to me, if a picture on a page can bring out such an emotion in me, it must be EXTREMELY well written.

this book, and all the other volumes after it, are highly recommended.
enjoy ;D

Itsuwaribito is a Shonen manga set in what could perhaps be Japan, but more like a fantasy world based on it. The plot and dialog might be rating Y (youth) or T (teen), but the violence could well be OT (16+).

Note, I tend to like manga more like Hikaru no Go, Fullmetal Alchemist, Honey and Clover, Fruits Basket, and so forth. Itsuwaribito has a different tone than your typical Shonen, like Naruto or Dragonball, but it has a lot of stereotypical dialog and plots.

Itsuwaribito - one who lies. Utsuho was betrayed, all the people he grew up with are killed, so Utsuho decides he hates itsuwaribito... and decides to be one himself in order to help people hurt by itsuwaribito. Sure. Gotta be evil to catch evil, I guess. And he does always out-lie his opponent.

Those lying-battles are the most entertaining. I read 3 volumes, and I think it was in volume 2, to give you an example, he says 'I will kill you with one finger' and the goons go 'yeah right', he says 'wait, I lied, 2 fingers' 'yeah right' 'I lied, 3 fingers' 'sure' '5 fingers' 'ok' - then he says 'no, I lied, 1 finger will do' and he tips over a candle that burns down the house. (Or something along those lines.)

However, the rest was brutal imagery and situations mixed with immature dialogue. One page, cute tanuki and squabbling kids, next page, creepy-looking guy who cuts off people's heads.

Character personalities were completely flat. The main character has a cheerful countenance and tendency to lie and unflinching throwing of bombs. The secondary character is a doctor who proclaims he 'hates itsuwaribito' and that is his entire personality. The tanuki's character is to be cute... very out of place.

If you are ok with the creepy images (like corpses of children), it might be interesting to try book 1, just for the lying-battles. But otherwise the series fails as far as plot, character, life-lessons, and logic.

Disclaimer: I am easily creeped-out. And I have trouble spelling lie and lay and all confusing variations.

If your a big shonen manga fan like i am and are really into series like bleach, naruto, and one piece, this series is....barely anything like those. Now you see my rating above so let me explain. Itsuwaribito is a manga that focuses more on a moral backdrop than a "dbz style". It's a story about an orphan, Utsuho, an orphan living in a village with fellow orphans and 6 adults to govern them all. Now, Utsuho has a very "bad" habit of lying, but this is due to the fact that his reason for being an orphan is due to his old trustworthy ways.
Utsuho isn't a typical shonen lead. His personally is a weird mix of Gin (Bleach) and Soul (Soul Eater). Kinda a dooshbag, but still wants to do the right thing, which brings me to his goal: (Itsuwaribito are master of lying, thieving, and overall trickery) Utsuho wants to become an Itsuwaribito that helps people with his lies.
Honestly, I enjoy this series a lot. Its a shonen that isn't trying to be a great moving series of the ages, but a fun adventure as Utsuho travels to help with lies....
In this volume you'll meet two more main characters. One of which, female fans will love and the other that will have you guess if they're female or not.
If you want something different with a new flavor to it. Try this volume out. I did and i have the first 3 volumes that already out (waiting on the future releases currently).
