"Ecclectic Student"
Well, technicall, it's before the beginning, but who's counting? In the first chapter, we see Ootani in 7th grade. He's just joined the basketball team, where he becomes fast friends with Nakao. His height is really holding him back, though, and he gets involved with a trouble-making student named Yoshii.
The next chapter focuses on Risa in 8th grade. Her height makes her awkward, and she doesn't feel much like a girl. But she's not really interested in boys, anyway. Her friend Akechin, however, has a crush on a guy named Yoshii. Risa tries to help her friend, but Akechin becomes jealous of Risa's friendship with Yoshii.
Risa and Ootani are in the 9th grade in chapter 3, but they haven't met up yet. Risa is excited about getting into Maido Academy, but Ootani is too bummed out about his break-up with Mayu Kanzaki to care. Both end up going alone to a Umibouzu concert. They're not having a great time, until they coincidentally meet up.
Finally, we get to see the gang after graduation. Risa is feeling a little left behind by Ootani, who's made new friends at college. Things are looking better when everyone gets together to go to the beach, until they run into Ootani's college friends. Risa starts feeling more insecure, and then Ootani forgets her birthday.
Volume 17 was a perfect way to end the series. It was interesting to see what Ootani and Risa were like in middle school and how different characters met up. Yoshii, who has a big role in the first two chapters, was a great character. The revalation that Ootani and Risa met earlier than they actually thought was a bit meet-cute, but still sweet and funny. And it was great to see everyone one last time after graduation. Risa's dilemma here was realistic, as always. It's not unusual for manga to end with bonus prequel stories and flash-forwards, but they're usually not all that good. This one captures the spirit of the series, is relevent to it, and is actually even better than a couple of volumes in the main story. It's sad that "Love Com" had to finish, but I can't think of a better ending! Now, let's all hope Shojo Beat picks up "Love Com D" ("Lovely Complex Deluxe"), which focuses on Risa's brother... Keep your fingers crossed!
