5The Tension MountsMay 10, 2008
By Hakajin "Ecclectic Student"
In this volume, Ootani gets tickets to an UmiBozu concert and invites Risa. However, he's absent from school the day before the concert, so Risa goes to visit him at his house. The two talk for a while, and Ootani ends up kissing Risa. But it seems to be an accident, because he doesn't even remember it the next day. Risa decides that she's going to get over Ootani, since it looks like he'll never fall for her. She directs her affections toward a new teacher, "Maity," who looks and acts just like the hero from her favorite romance video game. She even forms a club of girls who admire Mighty. But Ootani is acting suspicious- suspiciously jealous, that is.

This volume has a lot of ups and downs. Risa gets hurt a lot, and it's sad at times. But some of her reactions are hilarious. Her club, the "Mighty Girls" make up ridiculous songs and cheers. And Risa makes some of her best ugly faces in her effort to appear cheerful. I think her attempt to make herself be happy after her rejection is a realistic reaction, as is the embarrassment that results. One thing I love about this manga is that Risa can be truly embarrassing at times. Sure, a lot of shojo heroines have embarrassing moments, but to the reader, they usually still look cute. But Risa really goes off the deep end sometimes. I appreciate this, because it makes her a more realistic character. We've all done embarrassing things, things that are in no way cute, and it's easy to relate to her awkwardness.

Also, those of us who were getting frustrated with Ootani will be glad to see him reconsidering. It doesn't just come out of the blue, either. Ootani's reaction makes a lot of sense in light of his jealousy. And Mighty's a good character, too. He's really nice to Risa, to the point of being cheesy, and the way he eggs on Ootani is great. Overall, Mighty's a comedic relief. Readers will like him despite his status as a (sort of) romantic rival.

Volume 6 of "Love Com" is really the buildup to volume 7, but it's plenty entertaining in and of itself. It's got some of the funniest and most dramatic moments in the series.
