5Buggy go... SPLAT!May 11, 2004
By M. Watson "Lady Ashura"
Well from all of these other reviews, I am sure you must know what happens in this volume of "One Piece". I'm just here as a cheerleader (^.^)! This series, whether in anime or manga form is simply too "cute" (excuse the girl-phrase). Luffy can't be more than sixteen years old, Zoro is maybe twenty-five, and Nami is maybe seventeen. So why are these kids pirates? Beats me!

Oh, except that Red-haired Shanks, a very laid back pirate & child-Luffy's hero, bestowed his very country-looking hat on the young pirate-wannabe (who, for some reason, got the bright idea to stab himself in the face to prove he was pirate material: dum de dum DUMB. Hence the -|-|- mark on Luffy's cheek).

And that Zoro was saved by Luffy when he was caught for being a PIRATE HUNTER(!) and his THREE swords- which he treats like babies when he is not sleeping himself- were taken away.

And when Nami, who hates, steals from, and has a MAJOR grudge against pirates was floored when she discovered Luffy's, um, PECULIAR traits (hey you try stretching your arm a couple of miles -_-"!) against the "sea-clown"/Buggy.

But you'll find all that out in the manga starting from Volume #1 on. Trust me: this series only seems to get better, adding tons of humor, crazy hijinks, absurd action scenes, and truly memorable characters to an already rollicking plot. After all, what other pirate ship do you know that has a skeleton and crossbones topped with a goofy hat and a grin? 'Nough said!

5The 2nd book in this epic series continues to entertain!Nov 05, 2003
By E. Cheng "manga enthusiast"
This series is wonderfully original and phenomenally funny! Just reading the first chapter made me a fan for life. The art style is very different but quickly endears itself to the reader because of its flow, pacing, and simplicity. The author, Oda has a gift for storytelling which is evident in this book and only improves as the series progresses. I strongly recommend that everyone pick up this book immediately and see why the series is loved all around the world.

The second volume in the series continues the "Buggy the Clown" story arc. Luffy and Zoro are in town to look for more crew members. Unfortunately for them, the town is already being occupied by the dangerous pirate Buggy, who has mysterious powers. In this whole mess, Luffy manages to secure a navigator for his crew and some new friends.

I purchased this from Amazon and have not had any problems. The publisher has released a statement regarding misprints in certain copies of this particular volume. Here's is the full text of their statment in case you have one of the erroneous copies:

4Don't make fun of the noseDec 23, 2004

Volume 2 of One Piece continues the adventures of Luffy and Zoro while introducing another character - Nami, the pirate thief and navigator. Together the trio must fight off bizzare lion tamers, acrobatic swordsmen, and stop Buggy the Clown Pirate from destroying a peaceful village.

Objectively, you could skip volume 2 and not miss anything in the overall story. The Buggy the Clown arc began in volume 1 and does not finish until volume 3, which is unsatisfying unless you read all the volumes at the same time. It's a format readers should get used to, as One Piece story arcs can drag on for volumes at a time (later arcs take as many as 6 books to wrap up). However, to skip volume 2 would be to miss out on a lot of cool action and character development. Unlike the horrible dubbed version currently playing on Foxbox, real violence actually happens to the characters here (Zoro is stabbed by Buggy's knife instead of simply being jabbed with it), and I hope Viz can continue to give us the original, uncensored versions of the story.

Get volume 2 and enjoy it for what it is - it's a fun read if you don't go in expecting the story to wrap up. Also try to find an edition with Zoro instead of Zolo, as Viz is reprinting the 1st four volumes after 4Kids changed the name to avoid copyright problems.

5If you think a fight can go on this long and be boring, thenOct 01, 2004
By Jet Black "Kevin"
...YOU'RE WRONG. This book was excellently written and drawn and kept me in suspense for every single page! It picks up where vol. 1 ended with Nami, the pirate robber, asking Luffy, the wannabe pirate, to join with her. He refuses, but that doesn't help his situation much. Buggy the Clown's men still think that Luffy is Nami's boss thanks to one of Nami's little lies at the ending of vol.1. Luffy is apprehended and locked in a cage. Nami tries to infiltrate Buggy's group but fails after she doesn't kill Luffy. Meanwhile Roronoa Zoro comes to the rescue, and saves Luffy, but is injured by Buggy, who has eaten of the gum gum fruit and has special powers of his own, like Luffy. However, after escaping momentarily, fighting is inevitable, but who will win now that Zoro is hurt?!?!? Also in this book are other new characters such as a dog who defends his dead master's pet shop-quite a moving scene, actually; the mayor of the town, and buggy's first and second mates-one a lion tamer and the other a gymnast with swords skills to rival-almost, that is-Zoro's skills. The only complaint i had with this manga was seeing the to be continued words and knowing the book had came to a close. Until vol. 3!!!! (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
