5The Next Chapter Starts Here!!Jan 10, 2010
By Simon
One Piece Volume 24 marks the final chapters of the Baroque Works saga and the beginning of the next big 'Skypiea' saga. It also marks the first volume of the new One Piece speed-up publishing plan, as books 25-28 have also been released simultaneously, with five more volumes each month until June 2010. If you haven't been saving up, you might want to start now.

The big twist of this book is one most fans have probably already known for quite some time, as both the Funimation dub and tie-in video games like One Piece Grand Adventure reached this point years ago (not to mention the original Japanese version and all the merchandising that spawned). But on the off-chance you're picking this up for the first time, I won't spoil it. Suffice it to say there will be new dynamics to the Straw Hat crew from now on and big repercussions down the line.

Another big plot point of this volume is the introduction of Bellamy the Hyena, who lords over the lawless island of Jaya where Luffy and gang go to search for clues to the mysterious "sky island." In one of the series' best moments to date, Luffy refuses to let Bellamy goad him into a fight even after the crew is humiliated and seriously beaten up. After volumes of fighting with Alabasta and the series in general, it's refreshing that Oda shows Luffy as the better man not by raw strength but by his convictions and determination. Of course, all of this makes the payback that much sweeter next volume.

And lastly, keep an eye out for Usopp's repeated assertions that he's not a carpenter and a large, mysterious man who shares the same passion as Luffy. There are long-term seeds being sown here, all of which make this volume an important and worthwhile continuation to the One Piece saga.
