5The Treasure Hunt Begins!Feb 23, 2010
By Simon
Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat gang have reached the cloud kingdom of Skypiea, but things aren't going so well. The crew has gotten separated, the Kami (God) of the land has labeled them fugitives, and now his Vassals are hunting them down. What's a pirate to do?

Volume 27 of One Piece contains a host of pivotal moments - many that further the Skypiea saga, others that connect the series as a whole. You'll definitely get your money's worth with the following:

- Luffy, Sanji and Usopp take on Satori together: in one of the rare moments of the series, a battle is fought not in the classic Shonen manga style of one-on-one, but a three vs. one group attack. It's fun to see three Straw Hats pool their talents together to take on one common foe, and it's an early clue that the fights of this arc won't follow the usual pattern.

-The Jaya Connection: Without spoiling too much, a clever reveal shows how the Skypiea arc links back to the adventures in One Piece, Vol. 24 and One Piece, Vol. 25, including one man's determination to prove his ancestor wasn't a liar. That leads to...

- Treasure Hunt!: Finally, we're given a clear direction for this story arc. And for the first time, the Straw Hat's main goal isn't to help a friend, save a village or topple a tyrant - there's gold in there forest, and they're taking it all for themselves. Yes the other elements work their way into the plot eventually, but for the time being we're reminded that One Piece is at heart a pirate story, and what pirate story is complete without a treasure hunt?

- Eneru is Revealed: Yes the Kami (God) of Skypiea is given a face...and it kinda looks like...Eminem? Just sayin...

- The Straw Hats have a mysterious benefactor: a pivotal story point is introduced here that will pay off much later down the line. There's not much to say except note it down and store it away, because we'll come back to it in Water 7.

So with all that said, this is definitely a volume you'll need to read.
