The Survival Game BeginsMar 04, 2010
By Simon In One Piece, Vol. 27, the Straw Hats discovered a long-lost connection between Skypiea and Jaya that involves a large amount of gold ready for the taking. The crew sets out on their treasure hunt unaware that a war has started between the forces of Skypiea's Lord Eneru and the Shandian natives.
As a One Piece fan, there's always a bit of bias with every review - I don't think the series consistently deserves 5 stars with every volume, but most of the time it hits all the right notes that I can give a pretty solid recommendation. This is one of the times where One Piece doesn't hit quite as high. The volume is comprised of multiple melee battles as the different sides clash and attempt to take each other out. Sometimes the battles involve the Straw Hat crew, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they involve the upper tier supporting characters, other times we get grunts. I like the idea behind the random encounters but in practice they don't work. Where Oda is usually very good at developing a whole new supporting cast with each arc and making you care about them, I found there were too many characters to keep track of and few were memorable besides their unique design. Plus with so many melee battles the volume's pacing is thrown off. The fights just kinda...happen. The story stalls while we watch the number of survivors dwindle.
What works as always is Oda's sense of humour, and a lot of great gags help liven up the chapters. The artwork continues to be solid, and at least multiple brawls are a lot more than most action manga would pull off - luckily we're spared the Dragonball-esque cliche of long, drawn-out fights with too much talking.
I don't think any real One Piece fans would really skip this volume based on a lower rating, but it's worth noting this volume isn't as satisfying as the ones before it.
