"Hard Travelin' Geek"
This volume introduces us to the Supernovas; rookie pirates who are making waves and have bounties and powers to match what the Straw Hats bring to the table. We're only given tastes of these nine characters (Luffy and Zolo are the other Supernovas) but what we do get is enough to make all of them seem interesting. However, even then some characters get either more screen time or just plain better scenes. That left me wanting to know far more about characters like Jewelry Bonnie and Trafalgar Law than I did about Killer and Urouge. But that's a matter of personal taste that will vary from person to person.
Despite being a good volume it gets off to a weak start with the Straw Hats Vs the Flying Fish Riders. It's not a bad fight and Straw Hats get some "big hero" moments which I love. The problem is that the Riders just don't seem like much of a threat. They seem like jumped up goons. Iron Mask Duval is a bit better about this and his reason for having a vendetta against one of the Straw Hats makes for what is honestly my favorite reveal of the series so far. The way that gets sorted out if pretty darn funny as well.
Once that's out of the way the crew gets to Sabaody proper and things roll along from there. I won't comment too much on all that because Oda packs quite a lot into a few pages but he does it really well. Important new characters, the crew having fun, things taking a turn for the worse and more. Good stuff. I especially liked that we got to see Sanji playing tactician again. It's a great addition to his character and one I'd like to see more of. I also liked how if you play close attention you can see Oda clearly setting up things that will likely pay off down the road.
All in all this is a really good volume of the series. It does come with some weak moments which do weigh things down a bit. But even a slightly flawed volume of One Piece is still very good reading so I very much recommend this volume.
