I love One Piece so much and this is whyNov 29, 2011
By PiyozR As a maker of graphic fiction, One Piece is my biggest Eastern inspiration. This volume continues the fast-paced and constantly hectic chaos of Monkey D. Luffy's epic journey to find the greatest treasure in the world, tossing our hero into the planet's largest prison, Impel Down, to rescue his brother, Ace. Many old nemeses return to help Luffy along the way, and all the new characters have energy and personality, too. Much like every other volume, #54 is a great read!

The great prison break-in at Impel Down is on! Luffy's quest to save Ace brings him to Impel Down and in typical One Piece style there's a whole new set of strange, scary, funny and dangerous characters waiting in the wings. Plus, some old faces turn up to add to the chaos.
Reading a volume like this where you can see lots of old threads coming together is a real treat. Eiichiro Oda has clearly planned the OP saga out in great detail and volumes like this prove it. Seeing so many old characters starting stepping back into the light mixed in with the new Impel Down characters puts a lot of balls in the air but Oda keeps what's happening clear, fun and interesting.
Strange as it might seem Buggy the Clown seems to steal the spotlight this volume. His transformation from low level early boss to big shot by circumstance is great to watch. It's odd to find yourself rooting for a guy like Buggy but he has just enough lighter moments to hint that he might have a heart under in all anyway.
He's also not the only old enemy to show some new facets but I don't want to spoil things.
All in all this is the start of another really good OP story that any fan is well advised to pick up.
