4Cute word play for a 2 year oldMay 22, 2012
By 33 year old lawyer
This book has a ridiculously simple premise. The word, "Pika" is repeated throughout each sentence.

So, Pikachu wakes up and has a great Pikamorning, she goes on a Pikawalk, she trips and Pikafalls (on a Pokemon named Diglet that looks like a small turd, no kidding. In each Pokemon book, at the end of the book, you are asked to find a new Pokemon character hidden in the book, which is how we find Diglett. Toddlers enjoy finding the hidden, new Pokemon. In the Charmander book, for instance, you are asked to find Mew somewhere in the book).

In any event, after Pikafalling on Diglett and hurting herself, she runs into Charmander, a lizard Pokemon with a flame on its tail, and they play. They have a Pika game, and she Pika wins, Pikaloses, and has a Pikatie. She has a Pika dinner, Pika bath, goes to Pika bed, and goes Pika night. She appears to live in an igloo.

Despite this premise, or perhaps because of it, my 2 year old gets a big kick out of it. She got it instantly, and basically reads it out loud herself as we go through the book. I point to the picture, and I'll say, "She got up and it's a great..." and my 2 year old will finish and say, "Pika morning." Etc. Etc.

I will say there is one disturbing thing in the book-- which is that despite the fact that it is good for toddlers, there are a couple of pictures that are hard to explain to them. Namely, Pikachu shocks Charmander with her electricity and Charmander is shown being zapped. More disturbingly, Charmander appears to light Pikachu on fire. When they have a tie, they both appear to be getting hurt. This is during their game. I try to explain this to my toddler by saying they have magic powers, they aren't getting hurt, etc. but it is still odd. They happily wave goodbye to one another afterwards, but I still find it strange to explain that. I wish they would delete that out.

I will also note that a lot of board books for young kids appear to either have male protagonists or they use male pronouns, or the female characters are lame (like princesses) and I like the Pokemon series because the Pokemon are gender neutral. In fact, I read the Charmander and Pikachu books using female pronouns, so my female toddler thinks the characters are both female. So, in an odd way, this is a good book for girls.

I also like the fact that after getting Pika hurt, Pikachu gets right back up and plays with her friend Charmander, and also that after a tough game with Charmander, she is still cheerful and she and Charmander wave goodbye to one another after the bout.

5Cute Pikachu book!Oct 24, 2009
By The Norseman
This is a cute little book that I bought for my son quite some time back. It speaks directly to the target audience and is a traditional "block book" with heavy stock pages. As my son said, "It is a must have for any true fan of Pikachu."
