5The best shojo manga I've ever readJun 24, 2009
Keep in mind I'm writing this review from the perspective of someone who has read everything released so far (no spoilers).

The art is beautiful, the characters are well developed, and the comedy aspect of this series is laugh out loud funny. Kyoko is the strongest female shojo heroine I've ever encountered, her refusal to be sad and self pitying is admirable. You really feel yourself getting behind Kyoko and cheering her on! This is a manga series I can re-read ANY number of times many times in a row and still feel content (please note I can only do this with one other manga series). The only drawback is I've caught up to Japan and have to wait for each chapter release eagerly. This manga has my highest shojo recommendation; it manages to have all the most positive aspects of a typical shojo story without any over girlie or sappy stuff that makes you cringe.

So speaking from someone who eagerly awaits every Skip Beat! release...as good as it is now in volume 1, the best is yet to come!

5A Breath of Fresh Air in Shojo LandJan 22, 2009
Tired of shojo with a seemingly perfect girl and Mr. Right hitting it off and living happily ever after? Then, read Skip Beat. The main character, Kyoko, is out for revenge against her former friend, Sho Fuwa. He used her as a maid while he made his climb up to fame. Kyoko overhears a conversation he has with his manager about this, and then, its on. She vows revenge.

Kyoko isn't one of those girls that does everything for the right reason. She isn't especially good looking or smart or anything. She is truly average. She is picked on and made fun of. A lot of things she does don't work. Most of the guys in the series are initially mean to her.

Her revenge filled struggle for fame is riddled with failures, embarassments, and lessons. The story is very easy to relate to despite a difference in situations. Everyone has felt like Kyoko at some point.

This series is a breath of fresh air for the shojo world. It is different than your typical story. I'm really glad that I gave this series a chance. It is a great read. I'd recomend it definately.

5One of the bestOct 26, 2008
So I didn't think a manga would trump Fruits Basket for me...
But this one is pretty darn close, and while I'm reading it it might just win out...

It's great to see a story of a girl trying to get even (rightfully so) instead of moaning or weeping, or trying to get the guy back.

Kyoko is probably my favourite female character ever, and Ren is quite high up for guys.

This manga is laugh out loud funny, touching, and gleeful in Kyoko's pursuit of revenge which later turns into a love of acting, despite the revenge.

It's even an anime now, currently being aired in Japan. So hopefully that'll make it to American shores as well.

Brilliant!

5Fantastic!!Jan 09, 2008
I read tons of manga. This has to be one of the all time best stories. The emotions that the characters experience are spot on. There has yet to be one page where you think that a character has done something that does not ring true. I have read all of the volumes in print so far, and can not get enough. Several of the volumes have be re-read more than others. This series will make you laugh, smile, and cry. There is a good mix of different aged people in this series which I think goes to make a more realistic "world". If you are looking for a great series, with several "bishie" boys, give this one a try. I unlike one of the other reviews think that the men in this series are very sexy. One of the villains in this series is so super cute, that it makes it hard to hate this twisted character.

5"If 'sorry' was enough, there'd be no need for HELL!!"Mar 19, 2007
I bought "Skip Beat" after reading a preview chapter in Shojo Beat magazine. I liked the plot and the humor, so I bought it when it came out.

I was expecting plenty of humor, but I got a lot more than that. Kyoko's quest for vengence is hilarious indeed, but the best thing about it is how easy it is to relate. In fact, this is probably why the humor is so good in the first place. It's great to watch Kyoko obsess over getting even because we've all been there. Who hasn't ever wanted to prove her worth to some stupid jerk? And Kyoko's moments of glory are extrememly satisfying. It's like when you argue with someone and can't think of anything brilliant to say until much later. Well, Kyoko gets some really killer lines in at just the right moment. I often find myself laughing maniacally right along with her while I'm reading (which earns me some curious glances from my roommate).

The characters make this manga, especially Kyoko. You can admire her devotion to Sho in the beginning, misguided though it is, and you really sympathize with her anger after she finds out she's been duped. She's strong-willed. She's not perfect and forgiving, and she doesn't go around feeling sorry for herself either. And I also like Ren Tsugara, the biggest celebrity around who has a secret mean streak.

The art is nothing special, but it's appropriate somehow. Kyoko's not especially glamorous, and the guys, though not pretty like in most shojo manga, are tall and dark. I thought the characters' designs all fit their personalities very well.

"Skip Beat" has become one of my favorite manga. A must-read for anyone who has ever been put down, made a fool of, or just wanted to get even.
