4Oh the pretty pictures!Oct 04, 2007
By sanoe.net
I am biased. I love Full Metal Alchemist. I especially love the manga of Full Metal Alchemist and this art book is works by the manga-ka, Hiromu Arakawa, and nothing from the anime.

And it is chock full of pretty pictures so as a fan, I am completely satisfied.

But with that said, I took one star away because I wish it had more commentary by Arakawa or an interview. There is commentary interspersed with the pictures and I enjoy the humor of them, but I find Arakawa's work so interesting that I'd like to know more of her thoughts on the series and the process she goes through to create the series.

Still, it is what most artbooks are: Full of wonderful, color pictures.

4Nice sequel to the first bookJun 17, 2009

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2OPI9A64URHGL The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist 2 continues where the first volume ends.

The art pieces are still from the manga instead of the anime series. This volume collects illustrations from 2003 to 2005. Additionally, it also has character designs for the Playstation 2 games Fullmetal Alchemist: Curse of the Crimson Elixir and Fullmetal Alchemist: The Girl Who Surpasses God.

The illustrations are full page coloured manga-style splash pages created with traditional medium, all drawn by Hiromu Arakawa. There are short captions, one or two sentences, under each illustration with the artist reflecting on the piece. I've not read the manga before so I don't know if these are actually the chapter splash pages for the manga.

If you already have the first book, you should probably know whether you would want to get the second volume.

If you like the style of Hiromu Arakawa, then this book is for you.

4Do you need to buy this book? Yes if you are FMA-crazyJan 31, 2012

Should you buy these "art of FMA" books? Is it worth the money? Well, I was wondering the same thing. I bought the following 3 books:

1. The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist
2. The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist 2, and
3. The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist: The Anime

They're all the same publisher and size and look nice together on the shelf. The contents, as everyone here has noted, are 99.99% full color illustrations. However, for items 1 and 2, you also get small footnotes from Hiromu Arakawa. Her comments are very brief but revealing. I felt I learned something about what it's like to be a manga author after reading about her feelings about each piece. If you are a fan, an artist, or considering becoming a manga writer, you should read it! Item 2 has a hilarious afterword by her in the form of a comic strip. For Item 3, there is an interview with Yoshiyuki Ito, the character designer for the anime (which Arakawa worked on only minimally). Personally, I much prefer Arakawa's comments, she is just such a character! What must it be like to create the world's most loved boy and robot? She must be on cloud nine. Roll over, JK Rowling. I'd rather be Arakawa any day! Ahem. End of review.

In this second artbook, it's noticeable how much Hiromu has improved over the years. Personally I like this one better, and the afterword is a nice touch. I highly recommend this book for FMA fans.

I really like this book. It's in the same style (binding, amount of pages, type of paper) as the previous artbook, but the art is only getting better. There are a lot of pictures that make me smile, some of Arakawa's typical chibi style, and some that are really fantastic to look at. Also, there's two years worth of pictures in it, which is more than the last book had.

It doesn't get a five because it is a bit short for an artbook, and some of Arakawa's comments leave something to be desired. Plus, the fact that each "chapter" of the artbook has the same summary printed on the bottom of each page is a bit annoying. Be forewarned, because of the way the black pages are printed, fingerprints get on them very easily, very visibly, and stay there.

But I'd still say buy it, because you'll go back and enjoy it many, many times, especially if you're a developing artist. :)
