I like this better than the manga art booksJun 17, 2009
By Parka Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1FKGKTBA260J4 This is the art book for the anime series Fullmetal Alchemist. If you're looking for the manga art book, there are The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist and The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist 2.
Full single and double page coloured character splash pages fill the book. There are no video screenshots, if there are, I must say I can't recognize them.
As the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, Hiromu Arakawa didn't draw any of the illustrations in this book. They are all done by the animation artists. The result is a very clean and polished look, typical of Japanese anime. Also, the colours here are more saturated, but that's got to do with the medium. As I like the anime very much, I prefer this book over the manga art books.
At the end are a few pages of line drawings with the finished frame as comparison. There is an interview with the character designer Yoshiyuki Ito.
This book is not really that expensive and I think it's worth the money if you're a fan of Fullmetal Alchemist who happens to collect art books.

Nice, but not as expectedOct 10, 2006
By Angela McClelland This is a gorgeous book that any fan of the anime will love, but it didn't contain what I had expected.
This book has full color illustrations in the anime style. In other words, what you have seen on posters, wallscrolls and the like. There isn't anything like screenshots, but original art in the anime style.
What I HAD been expecting where character, background, and item reference art, such as what would have been used in the production of the anime. The closest to that is a small section with lineart from art in the book, as well as a 'how they do it' section on the steps they take to make the images.
This is a book every Fullmetal fan will love, but I was just expecting a little more from the production aspect of the show, not just images they use in calanders and such.

Do you need to buy this book? Yes if you are FMA-crazyJan 31, 2012

Should you buy these "art of FMA" books? Is it worth the money? Well, I was wondering the same thing. I bought the following 3 books:
1. The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist 2. The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist 2, and 3. The Art of Fullmetal Alchemist: The Anime
They're all the same publisher and size and look nice together on the shelf. The contents, as everyone here has noted, are 99.99% full color illustrations. However, for items 1 and 2, you also get small footnotes from Hiromu Arakawa. Her comments are very brief but revealing. I felt I learned something about what it's like to be a manga author after reading about her feelings about each piece. If you are a fan, an artist, or considering becoming a manga writer, you should read it! Item 2 has a hilarious afterword by her in the form of a comic strip. For Item 3, there is an interview with Yoshiyuki Ito, the character designer for the anime (which Arakawa worked on only minimally). Personally, I much prefer Arakawa's comments, she is just such a character! What must it be like to create the world's most loved boy and robot? She must be on cloud nine. Roll over, JK Rowling. I'd rather be Arakawa any day! Ahem. End of review.
Beautiful, Must Have for Fans!Dec 23, 2011
By JMH The book is absolutely beautiful! I was surprised when it arrived and discovered that the book was hard cover, and going at a decently low price. Although while most of the pictures are easily found on the web, it's wonderful to have them printed in good quality and the publisher's did the colors of the anime justice (this was important to me because I fell in love with the rich colors). They are beautiful and eye catching and just as richly done. Be warned for those who don't like the traditional Japanese method of reading right to left, because this is how the book is printed. As huge fan of animation and of the show itself I had to add it to my collection.

By Msanimefreak Ok so this book isnt what most people think when you read the title. It is a hardcover book with about 15-30 pages with mainly pics of anime FMA posters that are out. At the end of the book, about 3 pages worth, there is an interview with the main japanese animator for FMA anime, NOT BROTHERHOOD. Do not be mistaken, this is a book for the original FMA not Brotherhood. Its a nice book if you enjoy just some of the main posters and wallpapers that are out for FMA. But remember, these are not poster sized pictures, they are just copies in a hardcover book. The interview was nice, but you can probably find it online somewhere. So all in all, I give this book a 5 star because the quality of the pics and the book itself is very very nice, but I would have liked to see rough sketches and pictures of how they created the characters instead of just the final product/ artwork. So this book isnt what I would say a "must have" for FMA fans, but it is a nice addition to my collection.
