5Unique and fun seriesSep 25, 2008
By A. Cosenzo
This manga is fast paced, goofy, and hilarious. It's very entertaining!

The art style is loose and appealing. It's not "slick" but instead has a hand-done, slightly rough look that I really enjoy. The story moves along quickly. The style of comedy is very random.

The main character reminds me of Yoh from Shaman King - blase and a bit detached, coasting through life, but willing to get serious when things get tough.

Overall this is a really good, fun, light read.

3KING CANDIDATE CHAMPIONDec 09, 2006
By Sesho "www.sesho.libsyn.com"
Kosuke Ueki is a popular kid at his junior high that is best known for making good grades even though he falls asleep a lot in class. He's even popular with the fairer sex, but Ai Mori wants to investigate him further because she thinks he might be an alien! Little does she know that Ueki is involved in a tournament to see who is the next "King of the Celestial World" which is being fought between superhuman entities known as Celestial Beings. But these Celestials don't lower themselves to fisticuffs, but rather choose junior high kids who they endow with an ability of their choice to duke it out. The prize the champions win for themselves is the "Talent of Blank". In other words they can claim any power that their imagination can come up with. Of course, if the King Candidate and the Champion are evil and they win, it will be bad for the Earth. So one candidate, Dr. K, has looked high and low for a suitable candidate that displays an impeccable sense of justice, and thinks Ueki is the right boy for the job. Armed with the "Talent to turn trash into Trees", Ueki begins to battle!

I was a little down on this manga because I had already watched three volumes of the anime, which I really enjoyed, before sitting down and reading Volume 1 of the manga version. A story like this doesn't really shout depth as its main focus so it's pretty hard for something so simple to be "fleshed out" in the first book, which was pretty identical to the first couple of episodes of the anime, with no interesting discrepancies or alternative viewpoints. While reading the manga was a little entertaining, so far I don't see the point in experiencing BOTH versions when one is just the same as the other. The characters of Ueki and Ai are likeable in their own right, with Ueki's drive to do the right thing and Ai's barely concealed crush on him taking centerstage.
