Excellent example of adult historical MangaFeb 15, 2009

The Vagabond series allows the reader to immerse themselves in a fictional Feudal Japan populated by historical famous sword fighters and describing their individual growth, evolving philosophy, and complex mental state during their dueling encounters. Impeccably crafted and beautifully drawn. Most pages are rendered with bold ink brush strokes and detailed pen & ink illustrations. A few striking watercolored pages brighten the beginning of each book and some of the breaks between chapters. While at times the action can be fast and furious during fights, the story pace slows down significantly to expose the underlying psychological layers, emotional conflicts, or cover relevant historical flashbacks. So rich in graphic and plot details, I enjoy reading each book several times to fully grasp and discover every aspect of the story. A satisfying series for adult readers interested in feudal Japan and a fictional historical account of the legendary sword master Miyamoto Musashi.

By setlib Volume 28 starts out with a brief episode showing how Kohei received the scar on his face from Kojiro, but then moves quickly into the aftermath of Musashi's great battle. While Musashi lays unconscious, Matahachi, Otsu, Jotaro and Takuan take turns sitting by his side, reflecting on their own reactions and desires. Are his injuries so grievous that he will have to give up the sword? And as word gets out about his victory, swordsmen from all over Japan plan to challenge him to duel to make names for themselves. Musashi's tension and frustration are palpable as all these conflicting forces swirl around him.
